Would you voluntarily hitch a ride on a Swedish overnight boat? Storm into a high-security guard’s station at the Kremlin in Moscow? Speak Romanian with an Italian border guard? This is exactly the type of thing author Val Karren has done, and encourages others to do as they bend the rules of culture (and sometimes caution) to live an adventurous and enriching life. His talent for word-smithing, and insightful and often humorous style turn his adventures into wonderful stories that can be appreciated by readers across generations and cultures.
During and after his initial European adventures, Val earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Slavic Languages and Literature from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a Master’s in Business from the Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands. His career in international trade has carried him to every part of the world, and he’s collected stories and varied cultural experiences along the way. He still lives in Europe with his wife and four children.
